Doggy Diaries – Food switch Day 3 – Human taste test

Well I tried the kibble tonight as I told Torrie I would haha!!! First I tried the Science Diet. Imagine really really really stale Fritos. That’s what they felt like. I managed to crunch it and then spit it out. I think cardboard would be better. There was no taste. Actually if there was anything, it was almost chemical. Not like an obvious chemical taste, but I’d have to say it was along those lines.

The Blue Buffalo had the same texture but the taste was more pleasant, if you can call it that. There was a hint of fish and berries. At least it has flavor. I also just crunched and spit it out. So, curiosity satisfied. You may now call me a freak, I won’t mind. 😉

Jayden is just off today. I have no idea if it has anything to do with the food switch or if he’s having an off day like we all do occasionally. The morning route to the store was awful. He didn’t want to go down the road again and that hasn’t happened in forever. It was so bad I got my cane out and had him heel. He wouldn’t hardly move so I stopped, had him heel and sit and then we set off again and he kept a good heel while I caned it down the road. There was no way I was having him do the street crossing when he was being that sluggish, so I crossed that and then put the cane away. After that he worked like a champ. It’s just something about going down our road. He did fine in the store, following the clerk. He did fine getting us back home and navigating around a large work truck with a trailor. He showed me the truck and then the trailor.

I have no idea what’s up with that road, why all of the sudden he didn’t want to walk it again. There’s just no apparent reason for it. Ugh.

Then, Carol stopped by. Jayden was snoozing on the couch when she got here so he didn’t hear her coming up and therefore didn’t go all nuts when she came in. The rest of the day he was just blah. He even lost interest in the Kong Wobbler when there was still food inside. Until it was time for feeding. He got all excited. Also, when I gave him the frozen Kong after the walk he went nuts and actually ran around the house with it.

So, I don’t know. I’ll see how he is for our nightly play session that we always have before bed.

Is this a normal thing during a food switch, or is it just coincidence? He’s had days like this before. I’ve been energetic and cheerful today, so it’s not anything he’s picking up from me.

Thoughts?

  1. I used to eat cat food as a child! Haha…I don’t know what I was thinking!

  2. I’m not going to call you a freak for trying a bit of dry dog food. As a person who once watched another human being consume an entire can of dog food, it would be wrong of me to lump you in with that guy.

Yuk! can’t believe you actually tried it!
OJ has plenty of off days I bet its nothing really.
I’ve never had to heel him like that though. There isn’t any place he really hates walking.

I think eating catfood as a child is more acceptable than a guy eating a can of wet dog food, yikes! Was it a bet, Steve?

Jayden only does it on that one road, and only sometimes. It’s the weirdest thing.

  5. Was it a bet? Unfortunately the answer is no, and perhaps more unfortunately that guy was my dad.

    Hahahah oh do tell…

  7. I wish there was more to tell, but I don’t remember there being more. He just ate it. No idea why.

  8. Oooooooooh you tried it!!! I think i would rather try it dry. When my food gets wet it swells!! I add a little water to her food to soften it, but i’ll have to bite the bullet and eat some! Mine doesn’t have any fruitiness or anything lol.

Class for you trying it though!!

Maybe he’s just having an off day. Ushi took ages and ages and ages to actually eat her food this morning, but eventually ate it. She was grand on her walk though.

I don’t know if you can use this, but I was told to lengthen the lead and hold it at the end then flick forward and say forward. Might help. Xx

I moisten his food too but I tried it dry.

Trust me, there has been a lot of florward flick action lol. He’s off again today. Talked to another handler at Saavi and his dog is off too. I’m thinking it’s like the cold weather folks have problems in spring, it’s opposite here. The wether is finally nice so maybe it’s making him a little crazy.

  10. I can tell you that the weather might well have something to do with it. Trixie has this tendency to go a little nutty when there are weather changes. Not all the time, but when she does things can get quite interesting for poor Carin.

Oooh yes I remember what she went through last spring. If it weren’t for what she went through, I’d be more concerned than I am. But I really think our fall is going to be like your spring for Jayden. Everything is beautiful right now and I think it’s making him forget how to work. At least I hope that’s all it is.

  12. LOL I remember in class all of us minors got together in the hallway and I caught it on video, all of us trying dog food. It was helarious. Of course we all spit it out. But loads of fun.

    Hahaha that’s too funny!!

  14. Darn! Malak beat me to it! I was gonna say that we all tried dog food, well 4 of 6 did… the other 2 weren’t around and probably would have just stood there and laughed at us anyway haha! I recorded it on my braillenote. The one kid wanted to eat it out of my roommate’s hand, but she was like “eeeeeew! Take it with your hand! I’m not giving it to you in the mouth!” lol

Hahaha tasting the food was just never brought up in my class. The weirdest thing we did was put See’s chocolate in poop bags for the instructors. 😉
