January’s Audio Books

I’m changing the way I keep track of books here on the blog. I’m going to experiment with writing a monthly post summarizing all the books I read, rather than writing a post for every single book which last year proved to be too overwhelming.

I listed these in descending order. I suppose that makes sense for the future if someone wants to read all the monthly posts. total books this month: Eleven.

11. “The Mime Order” by Samantha Shannon – narrated by Alana Kerr

Finished January 30

Oh man this book was so freaking good! If I thought “The Bone Season” was good, I had no idea what I was in store for with book two. The story picks up right where it left off in book one and Shannon does a brilliant job of recapping without being tedious and obvious. She weaves in reminders of book one as the story goes along in book two. ‘Bone Season’ was definitely the series set-up (see a few headings down). The story continues with non-stop action and intrigue. The dystopia takes on a very Victorian feel and has many more characters it seems than did ‘Bone Season’. I just did not want it to end! Did you ever see the French Film City of Lost Children? If so, that’s how I imagined this world looking. Very dark but with bright colors. The book is so visual! Shannon is just a brilliant writer, in my opinion. the novel is three dimensional, if that makes sense. It was like a movie in my head. Absolutely loved it. There were questions posed that leaves me impatient for book three. And Warden…*sigh*.

alana Kerr seems to have found her groove as a narrator, sounding more animated in this one and less like she was reading the phone book like in the first book. It’s fun watching these two women grow in their art! Samantha Shannon’s Twitter is linked a few headings down. You should become a fan of this awesome young lady!

10. “The Girl on the Train: A Novel” by Paula Hawkins – narrated by Clare Corbett, Louise Brealey and India Fisher

Finished January 27

I probably would have gotten done with this book faster but my friend Chupa was visiting so I didn’t read at all during the day. Her visit was so much fun! I converted my den into a guest room and couldn’t help but feel very adult with the purchase of an air mattress and guest towels. the weather was beautiful and we spent most of our time sitting outside listening to music, except for the day we took paratransit out for Mexican food and our traditional Walgreens visit. Be well. The first paratransit driver decided to give Chupa the whole experience by driving down bumpy roads on purpose. I was sad when she left on Wednesday night. We did an impromptu podcasty thing if you’re interested in our ramblings.

I saw a New York Times article about this book on Twitter and just so happened to have an extra Audible credit so I picked it up. This book is about an alcoholic who rides trains all day. Not like, cargo trains, passenger trains in and out of London?London I think. yes, London. I think, ha! She rides trains and tells herself stories about the people who’s homes she passes. She ends up getting involved in a missing persons investigation after one of the women who’s house she passes goes missing. Actually she pretty much inserts herself into it. It’s quite sad really.

The book is told from three different points of views, hence the three narraters. Every time we got back to the drunk I’d roll my eyes. She really did get tedious. Hawkins nailed the self absorbed alcoholic though, that’s for sure. She must have some sort of personal experience whether it’s herself or someone she loves. Maybe the alcoholic isn’t so tedious to a normie but for me, I just wanted her to get off the drunkalog and into the solution haha!

The mystery was really well done. Literally every character is a suspect. The drunk? The ex-husband? The red haired man? the psychologist? did the missing woman just run away? and each one gets some time in the red herring spotlight. The aha moment hit me about thirty minutes until the end of the book and then I sat on the edge of my seat waiting to see how the book would resolve. Excellent mystery! The three narrators were pretty good too, all very British which is just soothing. It was nice to read a current IT book haha. I found Paula Hawkins on Twitter.

Oh, my only pet peeve was some outdated technology. I have to wonder if Hawkins started writing this awhile back and didn’t catch phones with buttons and phrases like “logged on to the internet”. I’ve noticed outdated tech in my book that I’ve done some revisions on. Maybe it’s a snobby pet peeve ha!

9. “The Alienist” by Caleb Carr – narrated by George Guidall

Finished January 24

How interesting that I read a book narrated by Alana *Kerr* and then a book written by Caleb *Carr*, both names pronounced the same way. Am I the only person who notices things like that? Also, Steve Kerr pronounces his name differently than Alana: ker. Kerr, ker. Anyway…

Ricardo really really wanted me to read “The Alienist”. I’m glad I did, though I wasn’t sure at first that I would finish the book. It got off to a slow start in my opinion and the book begins with a gruesome murder of a child prostitute. It was tough to stomach. Slowly but surely however, the story drew me in as a psychologist, otherwise known as an alienist in 1896, his friend a reporter and a police secretary begin investigating the murders of the child prostitutes no one cares about. Special Victims Unit anyone?

This wasn’t a typical detective novel which was good because I’m pretty much sick of detective novels. This one had a fun historical fiction element and while the character development took awhile to click, when it did, I enjoyed the people very much. The criminal profiling was fascinating and had a ‘Silence of the Lambs’ feel about it. george Guidall is always a good narrator. I definitely recommend this book. I also want to see what else Caleb Carr might have out there. Thanks Ricardo! Oh, let’s see if Carr is on Twitter. I didn’t find a Twitter but I did find this site, which has info about his other books. I’m going to have to check it out since it sounds like there’s an Alienist movie and TV show. Interesting!

8.“The Bone Season” by Samantha Shannon – narrated by Alana Kerr

Finished January 19

I read this back in November of 2013. You can read my review here which I just did and I think it was a pretty good review. It’s interesting how differently I would have written about it this time around. Honestly it’s sometimes hard to write reviews about books which is why I got so far behind last year trying to write a single post for every book I read. I think a simple list in a monthly post will be much easier.

I read “The Bone Season” again because book two of the series was due out this month and I needed a good refresher since Shannon’s world is so complex. She tweeted links to a lot of good posts for a refresher but I just wanted to read it again. I got to follow Shannon on Twitter while she wrote the second book. So cool! I just adore her. You can follow her here.

1. – 7. The Kara Gillian series by Diana rowland – narrated by Liv Anderson

I started this series last year and finished the sixth book early This month. I often times will go back in a series and read a little bit of the first book in a series just to see how it all began. I did that with Kara Gillian and next thing I knew I was finishing the whole book. I just wasn’t ready to be done with Kara Gillian the summoner of demons, her friends and the demons themselves. I ended up reading the whole series again, enjoying being absorbed in pure fiction with fun and interesting characters, human and demon alike. I even bought a can of Cafe Du Monde coffee with chicory. I mixed some in with my usual coffee and it is most definitely an acquired taste. I drink coffee black at home but I found the chicory needed the sweetness of some Splenda to help off set the bitterness. It was fun to drink the coffee one of my new favorite characters drinks though! I highly recommend this series if you’re craving some pure escapism. In fact, is it April yet? I seriously cannot wait for April.

Book seven is out in April and I cannot wait! Diana rowland has put some quotes from the book up on Twitter, torturing her fans. Isn’t she kind? She is definitely one of my most favorite people. She never fails to make me laugh, both in her books and on Twitter. You can follow her here.

Hanging with Ro Episode 14 – New Year’s Eve in Flagstaff Style

On New Year’s Eve, B and Jayden and I piled into the car and drove up to Flagstaff, AZ. The band Quiet Riot was doing a show there so we had been planning the trip for about a month. When he first asked me if I’d want to go I thought it would be fun to chill in the hotel while he went to the concert, but then I considered going to the show. It had been years since I rang in the new year anywhere other than my bed haha! I ended up not going though because it would have just been too loud for Jayden and for me. I like my hearing, thank you very much.

The drive up was uneventful. I listened to Josh Groban non-stop. B started telling me about snow on the ground next to the highway the closer we got to Flagstaff. Snow! When we arrived at the hotel the temperature change was quite drastic and the breeze bit my skin as we walked to the lobby. Inside I quickly put my Rays hoodie on.

The room was great! It had a little kitchen with a full size coffee maker. I brewed the coffee they provided but it wasn’t good so we’d have to hit a Starbucks so I could get some instant.

We relaxed for a bit in the room and after I fed and relieved Jayden, we headed to the casino to eat. B had to pick up a player’s club card which was the ticket to the show. Sitting in a diner at a casino at 5pm is super creepy. Unless it was just this particular one. It sounded like the most depressing place. There was no laughing, no idle chatter, no music and I kept hearing what sounded to me like a zombified game of Marco Polo.

As we ate I listened and finally got that people were walking by the diner saying, “Kino,” and the staff at the diner parroted them back in a very lackluster voice. Alrighty then.

Then B noticed the band walking right by the diner! He named each member as they passed. The drummer was last, the only original member of Quiet Riot and B said he was the only one with an entourage. Me: Really? B: Yeah, two people.

They were carrying their own bags and everything. Life as a washed up old hair band? It was still cool though.

As we were walking onto the actual gaming floor to get B’s pass, a security guard stopped us. I couldn’t hear what he was saying so he spoke up. He was asking if Jayden had paperwork. I blurted that I have an ID for him but I think the guy could tell I was shocked at the question. He said something like, “what are those dogs called, I can never remember.”

“I’m blind and he’s my guide dog.”

He let us go then. It was bizarre.

The game floor was so smokey! It rather disgusted me and I couldn’t believe I used to do that. I guess I have become the grumpy ex-smoker haha! It’s not so bad outdoors but inside there? Whew!

B got his pass and we went back out into the cold. Wow cold. I mean, cold!

We headed back towards the hotel and I used Siri to locate a Starbucks. Now I had real coffee and was good to go. We hung out for a bit and B tried watching that awful duck show. He switched to New Year’s stuff and there was a year in review show that was rather interesting. We never watch TV other than sports, so it was an experience haha! They discussed things I had only read about on Twitter. Pop culture anyone? It’s lost on me.

After B left I decided on a whim to record a voice note and it morphed into a Hanging with Ro episode. It had been awhile since I recorded myself being a goofball haha!

Ok so now for Hanging with Ro Episode 14. How perfect is that? Episode 14, ringing in 2014. Whoa. *opera voice* Spoooooky! *end opera voice*

So there are two files. This first one is the longest. I think it’s around forty minutes or so. I had no idea where it was going when I started haha! Topics include but are not limited to:

*Breaking the rules with Jayden

*Being out on New Year’s Eve. I just remembered the last time. It was 2005/06 and Georgie and I went to an AA New Year’s event. We were both in our first year sober and we were so scared we’d get hit by a drunk driver.

*Muttmuffs

*B stands for…

*Getting distracted and laughing at the TV

*Seriously? That’s CNN? Anderson Cooper giggling.

*Remotes hate me.

*2013 year in review. Colorado to see Chupa and my first Rays game. Feeling fabulous in Colorado.

*Hip pack humiliation.

*Bad summer, bad health oh who’s singing?

*Josh Groban. How I love the Josh Groban.

*We need to move. Teeth. Not move teeth. Ow.

*Gamma

*I don’t get TV.

*I make a cup of instant coffee but not in the closet.

*I sing la la la and the Josh Groban love begins with gusto.

*Flagstaff smells good.

*I try and describe the Grand Canyon.

*More Josh Groban drool only this time with songs on the iPad. I’m pathetic.

*Ok Josh maybe I didn’t hear that right from you I can’t be certain because you all talked a lot.

*Wow I was sniffling already. I got totally sick the next day.

*The song that made me cry in the car is a Stevie Wonder cover.

*Here is the translation to the song I was swooning over.

*I tell you to look up this clip on youtube so here it is.

*Ok wow I really am happy being me, trust me.

*Who’s outside the window?

*I wish I could shut up my humming.

*I waste time trying to play a song. I didn’t realize I had lost my wifi so I couldn’t get it from the cloud. Here’s the other Brave song by Sara Bareilles. You’ll probably recognize it from those Microsoft commercials.

*I wrap up this portion finally haha!

New Year’s Eve Part 1

And we’re back. This one is about sixteen minutes.

*I’m paranoid it’s not recording.

*Two minutes away from 2014.

*Loud upstairs neighbor.

*David DeJesus is mentioned. Baseball must be on the brain.

*Sleepy girl

*Midnight in New York phone call.

*A totally lame Arizona midnight but at least I checked the time at the exact right moment.

*Evan Longoria. He is seriously mentioned in every single one of my audios. You’d think I do nothing but talk about that man!

*I talk about the Phoenix trip I had forgotten to mention in my year review. Who got to go on the field at Chase Field? Thank you David Price!

*Phoenix killed me though. Well not really since I’m alive but you know.

*Disappointed girl in a Vanderbilt shirt.

*Dave and Andy!

*Learning from mistakes.

*Sleepy iPad scrolling. More talking about Josh Groban. Here’s the song I talk about where his voice becomes part of the instrumental. I really think that’s one of my favorites.

*Finally come to my senses and wrap it up. I also mess up a New Year blessing haha!

New Year’s Eve Part2

I was up when B got back. Just after I stopped recording, fireworks started and there were a lot of people outside the hotel. When I took Jayden out I couldn’t believe how cold it was! Wow. When I asked Siri she said, “brrrr, it’s twenty-two degrees.” B and I talked about the show and then I tried to sleep and failed miserably.

The next morning I woke up way too early and sat on the strange uncomfortable couch waiting for B to get up. Even he couldn’t sleep late. That hotel was so noisy!

We took our time getting ready and headed out to the Grand Canyon. I was sneezing a lot and wished I had taken some of the cold meds I brought with us. The Canyon was about an hour and a half from the hotel. On the road leading to the Canyon, there was suddenly a huge heard of elk! Do they roam in heards? Is it spelled that way? Hmmm.
Anyway, B had exclaimed, “deer! Wait, those are too big to be deer.”

“Are they elk?” I asked.

He said I was probably right and explained that a few crossed the road and several were on the side grazing on grass. Cool!

We parked and found the restroom and I had a total panic attack in there because it had hand dryers that sounded like freaking wind tunnels and they hurt my ears and Jayden was affected by them too and holy crap it was good to get out of there.

We made our way to where B could see the canyon and I listened to all the accents around us and children and different bird sounds. It was very cold and breezy. I did not feel well. There was much more walking than I had expected. I mean it’s a huge hole in the ground. It doesn’t seem like you should have to walk very much to find an edge. It had been sixteen years since I’d been there so couldn’t remember. I wanted to get to a good spot to get a picture with Jayden and me in front of the canyon but it was going to involve steps and there were too many people and yeah. Blah.

I snapped some pictures with my iPhone and sent one to Twitter and apparently it was lovely. Let me see if I can find the tweet. Ok I can’t find it so I asked Twitter. Might just have to upload it again. I should really figure out Word Press pictures haha. Here’s the picture. Thanks, @L_Squared!

So I just got sicker and sicker as we went back to the hotel. I collapsed for a bit and then we started trying to figure out food. The only two places that were open on New Year’s Day were The Outback and Sizzler. Sizzler? They still have those? That was my first ever job. I was a salad bar keeper. Fried shrimp entered my brain and that was all I could think about. So we went there and there was actually a huge snow drift in the parking lot! I had my fried shrimp but I was so miserable I hardly remember it. Bread pudding for dessert. I thought a rap in my head: I had dinner, at the Sizzler with my mister, on New year’s Day, while I had a fever. Wow. Um. Yeah hi. I won’t quit my day job. Oh wait, I don’t have one.

We went back to the hotel and I did some packing up and crashed. That was pretty much it! It was a really good time and I’m glad we did it. I felt pretty good there in Flagstaff, minus being sick of course. It was like how I felt better in Colorado. High elevation and cold, I tell ya. I used to think I’d like to live in Flagstaff but I don’t think so. Just too cold and there’s an odd feeling there. Just like in Sedona when I went with B several years ago. We both feel it in northern Arizona. Just an odd feeling. It’s a nice place to visit though!

Happy 2014 everyone! I hope you enjoyed the audio if you listened.

Hanging with Ro Episode Thirteen – Sleep Mic New Deprived

This is long, an hour or so. I am very sleep deprived so that made for some really rambling and silly audio. You can feel free to save it to listen to instead of the Presidential debates tomorrow night.

The audio starts a little iffy with some clipping but I made an adjustment and after that it sounds pretty good. Yay for a new mic!

Topics include but are not limited to:

* The @MuggleHustle Twitter account

* Jim Gaffigan and Hot Pockets

* Coffee and murdering a coffee maker

* Baseball

* Find out if I’m a Scientologist

*Too much Twitter, sorry

* Quick Fleksy settings/dictionary demo

* Should we have a Hanging with Ro music game?

There’s more but my brain is about to shut down from lack of sleep. Go listen if you want to know what else, k? K.

Hanging with Ro Episode 11-11.3 – No Clue What to Call It

After the post I wrote this morning in my full depression and semi sleep deprived state I talked to Georgie and that helped a little bit but then I just got overwhelmed all over again so I started playing with my audio recording software while I waited for my friend Chupa to call. After talking with her I felt a LOT better. I listened to the hour long recording I had done testing all kinds of things and I didn’t like how it turned out. So I tried again and Episode 11.1 was born.

I didn’t like how that turned out so I tried it a different way and Episode 11.2 was born. I wasn’t going to do any more but then I hoped to capture the storm if it got bad so Episode 3 was born. Below are the links. I honestly can’t really remember what all topics are included. My depression, music, Twitter mistakes, baseball, Evan Longoria, the usual riff raff of whatever. I’m exhausted now and the storm didn’t come, though it sure sounded like it was just after I ended the third recording. I really need to figure out how to edit the beginning and end of these where Voiceover can be heard controlling Audio Hijack.

Enjoy at your own risk.

Really quiet Episode 11.1

Much louder Episode 11.2

Quieter, experimental and hoping for the storm Episode 11.3

Testing new recording software for the Hanging with Ro episodes

I’m not going to give this an actual Hanging with Ro episode number since this is just a sample recording. I’m changing things up and using Audio Hijack Pro now instead of my iPod with a video camera. I tried to upload to youtube so all the episodes could be in the same home but I’d have to convert the audio files to video files using a slideshow in iMovie and while I could do that, that’s just too much work. Using Dropbox is just much easier. These files are a lot smaller than those video files were too, so this is jut the way to go.

Sooo….have a test. This thing is only a couple minutes long. My mic gets fuzzy at times. I’m not sure what to do about that.

Topics Include:

*Rambling on about the new recording software and testing

*Upcoming Rays game and division stats

Here be the test audio.

Thanks for all your help, Ricardo!

Hanging with Ro Episode Ten – TRX Time

This is for those who asked me to get audio of the TRX. This is not instructional audio. Do not take this as instructional. I was shown this by a trainer. This is not instructional. Do not attempt this at home, etc etc etc. Ah, don’t you love a sue happy society?

There’s a couple loud ouch moments. Hope this makes a little sense. I didn’t plan it haha! Do I plan any of these? Not really.

Hanging with Ro Episode Nine

I must figure out another way of recording stuff because my handy little iPod is being stupid lately and deciding when to shut me up. I restored it once and it was fine after that for awhile but again today it cut me off before I had even begun to wrap up. Maybe it’s a good thing, since it was already like sixteen minutes haha.

Topics include:

*Updating the iPhone and using a wireless keyboard with it

*Coffee

*Baseball and Evan Longoria’s injury

*I can’t remember what else

Hanging With Ro Episode Eight – All Crazy Cardio Style

Twice I tried to get audio of me doing a TRX workout and both times, my iPod stopped recording. I reset it and just needed to test something. I decided last night to try adding a cardio workout in today even though Thursdays have been off days since I started working out over two years ago. I’ve been working out Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays here at home after about two months off for varying reasons. When I was working out regularly, I was only doing it Mondays and Wednesdays, with the intention of adding Fridays when the weather cooled off since I could walk down to my home gym. Yeah, that never happened. Having the TRX at home is what finally gave me the motivation, since now I have everything I need here in the house to work out. I want to get back to the gym too though, since I miss my friends there and I’d like to weigh in even though that’s dangerous. 😉

I thought it would be fun to record and what follows is the result since the iPod didn’t stop recording.

Topics include:

*A disclaimer that this is not instructional audio since the world is so sue happy.

*The importance of stretching.

*Jayden getting exercise.

*My inner woo girl I didn’t know existed until today.

When I played this back to see if it cut off, Jayden got very excited when he heard himself squeaking his Cuz, so if you have dogs, they might have some fun with this. Jayden squeaks pretty much the entire audio hehe!

Hanging With Ro Episode 7 – Baseball among other things

It was decided last night that another episode would be recorded today since Morgan wanted to give me ideas and she didn’t have school today. Sooo, I started recording before I was fully awake because I didn’t know what the day would bring and I wanted to get it done. It got interrupted before I covered everything I wanted, so there might be a 7.2 episode later, depending on things.

Topics include:

*Morgan’s blog post.

*Baseball, baseball, are you excited about baseball, baseball and baseball.

*Rays FanFest and calls from people like players named Sean Rodriguez.

*Twitter stuff, bombarding followers with giddy goofiness

*Is today the day after the president’s day holiday?

Of course there’s more and of corse Evan Longoria’s name was mentioned. I think even if you’re not a baseball nut, this is still a fun one.
