Doggy school – Dog Day 2

Ok here is what I wrote while I was waiting. I know this is going out of order, but oh well. And as with the other journal posts I’m leaving in typos so this is exactly how I wrote it.

***

We had a lecture on meeting your dog and then the instructors took their sweet time coming to tak to us. they went around the room and gave everyone theier dog’s names. three no four people were ahead of me and there were some funky names, thats for sure. one guy asked if he could change it and then kept talking. they gave another lady her dog’s name and then they got to me.

you will be receiving a yellow labrador male named Jayden. J-a-y-d-e-n.

Wow! Jay jay, jay, jayden. I kept whispering the name. Jayden. Yellow male. Jayden, wow!

Then it was time to go back to our rooms and wait. So Here I am. Waiting. My door is open, I hear a vacuum, people talking, footsteps. I wonder how long I’ll wait? They are taking me to an instructor’s office to meet Jayden. So I just wait. I’m not calling anyone. I thought about texting Carin or calling friends or family or B but I just want this time to myself, to listen, to write. Jayden. I’m not crying yet. I feel a little misty. Will I cry when I meet him? I just heard an instructor say Gary are you eady? I think they’re starting. Who are they taking? I just heard another classmate say his dog’s name.

Oh man. Jayden. Lala. I hear people. Gootsteps. They pssed my room.

I have my leash around my neck and my treat pouch on. Jayden. Jayden. Jayjay. I wonder who won the pool. I get to go look at that soon. I hear them. They are taking the person across from me. Oh my goodness. I think they are going backwardsd which means I might be next. I need Gatorade. Ok that’s better. So glad I have my computer to write down this moment. I’m not recording it. I don’t want to focus on a stupid iPod when I have a Jayden!

La la la. Hmmm. I wonder who his raisers are. Yellow fur will be good in the sun. Good. Oh it’s gonna be Jayden, Spinelli, Timmy and Fi. Hehehe!

Insert is Jayden. I think I got the most normal name hahaha! I love it! It’s pretty quiet out there now. Quiet quiet. Something rolling. Cleaning people maybe. I hear them coming back. I hear her dog, the woman across from me. I might be next. Yep she’s coming back! Oh dear. Am I next? Am I? Am I? He’s walking away. I hear the lady across from me talking to her dog. Oh goodness. I hear an instructor again.

Ok I heard “do you wanna get the next dog ready?” Is that Jayden? Is it? Nerves. Can’t wait! Oh goodness. Where are they. It’s finally hear. Ok now I feel like I might cry. The lady across from me is crying, softly talking to her dog. My hands are trembling. Lump in throat. tears in my eyes. Jayden, yellow lab male, Jayden. Ok crying now. footsteps.

Doggy school – Dog Day 1

Ok so this is the first thing I wrote on Dog Day. I don’t even remember when I wrote it lol! Some point on Tuesday I think before I got his name. So below is what I wrote.

***

Today is dog day! I can’t believe it’s finally here! I got to work with two dogs in training yesterday, just doing some heeling and obedience, and it was the coolest thing.

I’m all over the place in this journal. I just started this one for today even though I haven’t finished the first one I started writing lol. But I just couldn’t finish that one on Dog Day.

Three people got their dogs last nighty. They are retrains who chose the three week retrain class over the two week one. None of them have dogs from GDB, oh wait no one did, I think, yeah. But the other two didn’t. The other two had in home training through another school, and the one has a german shepard who was just getting way too protective. The other person’s dog started getting a soft esophogus. Not sure why the third person had to retire her dog.

Anyway, so at dinner last night, I’m exausted. We had done lots of Juno work and the work with the two dogs and we also did work in downtown San Rafael and it was actually hot. I didn’t prepare because I didn’t realize we’d be doing a long Juno walk, so I got pretty hot. So we got back and actually had an hour and a half free time before dinner, yay! I talked to B and my dad and uncle and was about to get in the shower when Carin called the room phone, awesome! She put up a blog post for me, letting everyone know I ws safe but had no internet. That morning, Barb called. She’s Carin’s best friend in Canada and I’m staying in her old room hehe! So that was great.

AFter phone calls I got in the shower since after dinner was yoga. So I’m sitting there all exausted and one of my table mates says, I’ve got my dog here!

I think he had been bursting to tell me and the other table mate hehehe! Both of us were shocked; we had no idea there was a dog there. So the guy is like yeah! I just got him an hour ago! He told us his name and that he’s a yellow male and we were so happy for him. Then he told us the other two got their dogs. So then I was all excited. I tured to my table mate and was like, that’s us tomorrow! Gary told me we’ll get the dogs before lunch! Gary is a trainer and he’s really cool.

So I eat and we’re talking and then I wanted to check in with the others who got their dogs so I went over to their tables and they told me about their dogs, a black female and another yellow male. Sweet!!

I went back to the room and Called Carol. I didn’t have a lot of time before yoga but I wanted to say hi. So we talked briefly and then I went down for yoga. I wasn’t going to do it because I was sooot tired but I also don’t want shin splints, and my body was hurting. I had packed my work out clothes for yoga, so I might as well, right?

The retrains had to leave their dogs on tie down for class and one of them was like, I don’t know why I’m doing this, I didn’t want to leave my dog already.

Yoga was fab though. Felt great! Then I had to crawl in to my damn hard bed. It’s awful. So now I’m all sre again. And I never sleep to the alarm. I did a little better last night, but still didn’t sleep well at all.

So now it’s 6:23am and breakfast is in a little under an hour. I guess I should get dressed and then wait. After breakfast I think we’re doing more Juno and then we get our dog before lunch. Insert will have a name soon! Holy crap! Ok, I should be able to write while I’m waiting for them to bring me Insert!!

***

Well cool I had said when I wrote that hahaha!!!

Doggy school – First Tuesday

I didn’t write at all on Tuesday but I just looked at what I wrote on Wednesday and it refreshed my memory a bit.

So Tuesday we started Juno work with the rolled up carpet. My instructor and an apprentice worked with me on opedience and stuff and we got our treet bags to start wearing. Then we got to work with two live dogs, who are in training, but not done yet. Sorry, but I can’t give their names. We were given strict guidelines about what to share in blogs. But I can say that they were both boys and very different. The first one was really chill and did great work. The second one was more playful, which was fun too, but he was a little harder to control. It was so cool to see real dogs. I took the opportunity with the second dog to love him up after praise hehe!

I just realized when doing Juno I always sayd “good boy”. Weird. Anyway, that was cool.

After lunch we loaded the bus and went downtown. We had a quick orientation to the lounge and then it was Juno time with Pete. I didn’t realize we’d go on such a long walk and it was actually pretty warm that day and I didn’t have my hat. So by the time we got back, I was hot and feeling sick. We were going to do something, a lecture, but I can’t even remember what it was. Hmmm. Oh well.

After everyone did Juno we came back and I hit the shower. I had showered the first night but I was so gross. We were having yoga that night after dinner and I really didn’t want to go but I did because I’m scared of shin splints. So I put on my yoga clothes for dinner. I don’t remember what we ate that night.

I went to yoga and it was so nice. The next day was dog day so I was hoping the yoga would help me sleep. Hahaha! Yeah how bout no.

I think I talked to B and Gamma before dinner, but I’m not sure. So that was Tuesday.

Oh yeah, I think we got orientation to the relieving circle but I can’t remember. Yeah I think we did, with Juno. You step off the curb and walk forwards and spin your leash around you, walk backwords and spin the leash and keep doing that. At least that’s how I thought it was done. More on that later.

Doggy school – Travel day

Ok today is time for catch up. I didn’t do much journaling while the net was down, but I have a couple documents. I’m going to paste what I wrote on Tuesday morning after travel day. I’m going to leave in the typos to really capture how exausted I was lol! I was also using a different voice at the time because Alex was in a full fledged tantrum and put himself on time out. So imagine being exausted and having to use another voice not nearly as cool as Alex. Ok so here’s what I wrote. I’ll finish the story after it.

***

I’m writing this on Tuesday morning. I know it’s going to get better, but I’m having problems. Alex keeps not wanting to wrok. I finally got him to speak and changed the voice to one that’s less memory intensive, we’ll see if that helps. I can’t get online yet, but I think it’s because my brain is mush so hopefully when I’m a little clearer, I’ll figure it out.

So it’s 5:49am on Tuesday morning right now. I didn’t sleep well. The bed is really, really hard. Not comfortable at all. So we’ll see how today goes haha! I was exausted yesterday after traveling.

I was up and all ready to go yesterday and wrote a quick blog post. B got up and ready, we loaded the car, and hit the road.

No tears, I was shocked! The night before, B said, it’ll be easier in the morning if we just go, no fussing over the cats. Well, I think I was so focused, and it was so early that I didn’t have a lot of time to fret.

So we get in the car and start driving, and it started a little rough. Then it died at an intersection but started up again. Then about 5 minutes from the airport, it was grining and sounding awful and barely running. He turned around to pull into a gas station and I called a cab.

He opened the hood and I was waiting for my cab and this mechanic stopped and sked if we needed help. He looked at something in the computer, told B what it said and then reset the computer which made the car work. So I cancelled the cab and B got me to the airport. I stayed surprisingly calm during all this, but I didn’t like the idea of taking a cab to the airpot.

I get all checked in, B gets security clearence, we go through security with no hitch, go check in at the desk at the gate. I had special paperowk requesting assistence. So he says he’ll come get me personally when they start pre-boarding.

***

Ok so he came to get me and B and I said a quick goodbye and the airline guy guided me to the plane. He was great, very friendly with a really cool accent. He got me on the plane and handed me over to a flight attendent. It was one of those little commuter planes with two seats on either side.

I stuffed my backpack under my seat. I already had my iPod in my pocket and had taken my decongestant. A girl sat next to me but neither of us were chatty. The plane started up and it was gonna be like a fourty minute flight. I just prayed during take of because ever since those bird strikes, take off scares me. We got up in the air and it was fine. The landing was fine but I have always hated the landing. The touching down and screeching to a halt lol. So we landed and were like twenty minutes early, so our gate wasn’t ready. We sat on the plane awhile before getting off. The flight attendant helped me and there was an airport guy waiting for me. So he was gonna take me to the next gate. He wanted to go on the people mover and I was like nope. You don’t want me doing a face plant at the end because you’ll feel bad. Good point, he said lol! So we walked awhile. We got to my gate and the gate agent was waiting for me. She had me sit where she could see me. There was a newlywed couple there opening their gift cards. It was really cute.

So we find out there’s an hour delay due to air traffic control in San Fran. I settle back to wait, and call the number GDB had given me to reach the trainer. He couldn’t hear me well, but I got it across that I was delayed.

Then after ten minutes they’re like, ok San Fran says we can go. So the lady came and got me and boarded me and a guy in a wheelchair first. Big plane this time. It’s a full flight. Two nice ladies next to me, I’m on the window.

The captain comes on and says San Fran stopped him again. It’s going to be about an hour and a half and we have to sit on the plane. Oh man. It was foggy in San Fran. So I call the trainer again and he says it’s sunny. Alrighty then.

I’m texting B and after awhile I got really uncomfortable and started hurting. Then I couldn’t find my blue tooth and the tears started. The ladies were really nice.

Oh yeah I needed coffee bad and one of the ladies had coffee flavored candy so she gave me on hehe!

Finally we were allowed to take off. We got up and I started listening to Uglies again. I also finally got a cup of coffee.

So we land and a guy is waiting for me and he had helped another student off that morning. By this time I’m like three hours late. So he looks at security and doesn’t see anyone from GDB. We went to baggage claim and Jim was waiting for me. He had already gotten my suitcase. Yay! So he takes me to the van and explains that in San Fran the runways are side by side so two planes can land, but since it was foggy, they could only land one plane at a time. That’s why were were delayed. When we landed I guess a plane landed next to us, according to the ladies.

Another student was in the van and he had been delayed too. We were the last to arrive. Another student’s flight was cancelled altogether. So we chatted on the way and I’m hurting in the seat. There were kennels behind me so the seat was up straight. Jim described the surroundings to us, and when we were on the Golden Gate, there was fog below us. Wow.

Finally we pulled into school and Jim rolled down the window and I could hear dogs barking in the kennels. I got all misty knowing my dog was in there.

We got to the dorm and Jim brought my suitcase in and then a girl was there to orient me to the room and said we were doing the welcome lecture and I was like, can I please have like twenty minutes alone to cry? She gave me that hahaha! So I just sat in my room and decompressed.

I went to the welcome lecture and met the other students but I was so tired. We had dorm orientation and I just walked around in a daze. The nurse came and got me to copy my insurance card and she told me another student was in recovery and he gave his permission to tell me who he was. Cool.

I think we had dinner after that. Yeah. The guy from the van is at my table along with another guy. It was prime rib yumm.

So I think after that I went back to the room and called Gamma and B but I can’t be certain. I set my alarm for breakfast and tried to sleep but it took awhile. The bed was sooo hard.

Oh they had brought me a fan because it was really stuffy in my room, so that was good noise. I’m so used to falling asleep to tv though. I solved that problem finally lol, but not until last night.

So that was the travel day. It was pretty awful haha!

Doggy school – Thank you Natalie and Darrell

Natalie, a puppy raiser, and Darrell, a guide dog handler, sent me a care package here at school!

After I wrote about loosing some undies in the laundry room back home, Natalie said Darrell doesn’t use this mesh bag they had for socks and stuff so she could send it to me at school. Wow! At that point it was too late to send it to me at home. So Tuesday I think, or maybe Wednesday, there’s a knock at my door and I have a box from Natalie. I was so out of it that I kind of acknowledged that it was an awfully big box for a mesh bag. But then I just didn’t have a chance to open it.

Finally on Friday I think, I opened it. On top there was a cd. Hmmm. So I stick it in and it’s a typed letter from Natalie and Darrell telling me what’s in the box.

Not only did they send the laundry bag, they bought two smaller bags for other delicates. They were at The Container Store which sounds awesome. They also send me six packs of gum and snack packs of Pringles. I don’t think I ever mentioned here how much I love Pringles. Carol will know how much that excited me hehe!

So thank you so much guys. I’m really seeing how amazing my blogger family is. I have another post about another puppy raiser once I get her permission.

You guys are all absolutely wonderful!!!

Oh duh and Natalie, I used it yesterday. Worked like a charm!! Some of the socks didn’t get totally dry, so I’m gonna look at those other bags and see if maybe I can split some stuff up. I had my sports bra in that bigger bag so I think it crowded the socks. Worked awesome!!!

Doggy school – Today was great!

We only work a half day on Saturday. So I was having issue getting back to the door from the relieving ciercle. The circle had caused all the problems yesterday, so I stopped an instructor as I came in and asked if there was anything I could do differently. He told me that Jay and I are very similar and that we both lack confidence. I’m looking to the trainers and Jay is looking to me and we’re not communicating. Did I already write this? Hmm…haha!

Anyway in case I didn’t, he told me they are backing off now to give us time to start trying things ourselves. He said do what you think you should and if you make a mistake, that’s how you’ll learn. So I relaxed a bit. I didn’t know that’s what was going on.

We met up in the day room and got our booties. Jayden handled them like a champ! He was so good while I was putting them on, and then I heeled him up and down the hall in them. Can’t wait to try them in harness. He’ll need to wear them in the summer in Arizona.

Then we got toys!! Yay! We got a nila bone and I picked the tug ring. We can buy any additional toys. I love tug, and figured that would be easier than keeping track of a kong.

All the dogs were gnawing on their bones and the instructor said it sounded like a bubbling brooke haha! It really did. Then the instructor was like, um Jayden just took another dog’s bone. Oops!! Haha everyone laughed while I told him no and gave him his own bone back.

After that I had to put Jay on tie down, sad, and go do a Juno walk to learn about reworking errors. So I did that and then I harnessed Jay up and we worked a route on campus to the play padock. It’s a large fenced in area where we can let them run loose and play. Only one dog allowed at a time. We practiced the come command, and no matter how much fun he was having or how distracted he was, he came right to me every time! I was given high value treats for that one, so Jay made out like a bandit 😉

After we relieved, I harnessed him up, got him on the curb, gave the forward command and he didn’t move. He’s been having some reluctance to get started, but instead of flicking the leash, I probed with my foot and I had been lined up bad. Had he obeyed, I would have fallen. Good boy!!! His first intelligent disobedience! I praised and kibbled and then we went to the door, where he paused and got praised some more. I halted him right inside and we had a celebration. It was then that I knew it all clicked for both of us. We’re becoming a team. I’m handling him with confidence and he knows I’m his person, after only a few hours of finding out what I’ve not been doing. Sweet!

We came back to the room and played tug and he was actually dragging me on the fllor. Strong jaws, I’m not that lite hahaha!

So then I had to do laundry so I can blog all day tomorrow. I left him on tie down and used the stick. When I came back his tail was thump thump thumping on the wall and he was so happy I was back hehehe! I finished laundry and put everything away and finally got unpacked and organized. Yay! We went for dinner, chicken parmesian yum.

After dinner I groomed him and then we did some obedience. He’s having some issue with heel, so we’ll be working on that tomorrow. He’s perfect in harness for the most part; he needs a correction sometimes, but he gets perfect position. During obedience it’s not so good. He’s great at sits and downs and down stays and sit stays and his call to heel is good except for his position. I’m pretty sure we’ll get it tomorrow. The boy is a fast learner! He was “melting’ really bad on the bus. They want him sitting and he kept wanting to lay. But he learned that in a day. He’s gooooood.

So it was a great day and I’m feeling happy and relaxed. Tomorrow we’re off except for fallowing the feeding and relieving schedule, so I’m gonna try and get the blog caught up.

We relieve in a bit and then I’m in for the night yay!

Oh and Jayden’s nickname is Jaybay. Like you’d say “hey baybay” that’s how I say it hahaha!!!

Doggy school – Ah Saturday

It’s 5:42am. I slept better last night. Not my eight hours, but pretty solid sleep. I’m so looking forward to only one workout today. It’s been crazy. Want my schedule? It’s been like this since Wednesday.

I have my alarm set for 5:30 but I’ve been waking up before it. I get myself woken up, then feed Jayden at 6:20 then water and then take him out. Then breakfast at 7:15 then we meet at 8:15, do obedience then go relieve then go load up on the bus to go downtown. We go downtown and then we wait our turn to go on route. We go on route, then load the bus, come back, relieve dogs, give them water then go to lunch at 12:30. Then at 1:30 we relieve the dogs again and load the bus and do a repeat downtown, wait for our turn for our route, come back then it’s feed, water and relieve at 4:30. Dinner at 6, so I found that little window before dinner is the best time to shower. I tried in the morning but it wears me out too bad. So that’s my day though that little description does not do it justice haha!

We finally had our first successful relieving last night. I really shouldn’t go into many details on the blog, but there has been some big tension with one of the instructors. Last night we had our person who stayed the night, I don’t remember what her title is, but she’s a guide dog handler and she helped me soooo much. Jay and I worked to the ciercle, he relieved and then worked me back and it was great. Maybe that’s why I slept so well.

We should be getting toys today. I really want that Nilabone for Jay. He has nothing right now.

Ok, gonna get dressed and ready to feed Jay.

Doggy School – I’m online!

I don’t know how it happened. It has been so grueling and so exausting that I was halfheartedly trying to connect since I got here. Finally I just gave up until Sunday when we have down time, but went to just journal tonight before dinner. It was a really, really hard day. I pretty much cried all day. The morning route was incredible, but then it was hard in the afternoon and I was really tired. At dinner, the nurse sat with us and she mentioned we might have rain tomorrow so that explained it. Anyway, like you all care about my fatigue. LOL! I’m sure you really want to know who Insert is, yeah? Do you?

Carin knows and thank you Carin for posting that post for me. I’m going to post this and then go publish all the comments I have, which are a lot! I can’t wait to see what you all wrote!

Ok, Insert is…a yellow lab male named Jayden. He is 62 pounds and 18 inches tall and he is my mellow yellow hehe! Yep, yellow. And oh so mellow. He was born on July 15, 2008, which means he was in the womb when I went blind. How cool is that?

I have just a little bit written about things so far, but not much. I think over the next few days, I’ll post what I have and then add on and try to catch you all up.

Jayden is asleep right behind my chair. He breathes deeply but rarely snores. He is a match made in heaven! Ok, gonna get this posted now so I can water Jayden in fifteen minutes. I’ve missed you all so much!!!

Oh yeah, Carin and Maddie tied for the pool, and Toby’s raiser is runner up so she’ll get a scarf. Two blankets and a scarf whenever I find time to crochet haha!

doggy school – from Carin

Hey it’s Ro talking to Carin on the phone. She’s posting this for me. I’m here, I’m fine, but my brain is apple sauce and I can’t figure out the internet. So I’ll post when I can, but I just wanted to let you know I’m alive.

Doggy School – About to go

I did *not* sleep well haha! The alarm went off and I wanted to throw it. Then Alex didn’t want to talk to me. Started last night. This morning he wasn’t speaking. Must be throwing a tantrum. I told him if he didn’t shape up, he would have to stay home. Then he worked.

I woke up at 5:30 and would have had plenty of time to write a post if not for his antics, but now I’m shorter on time. It’s just after 6am and we’re leaving about 7:10 or 7:15. Gotta pack up Alex, get dressed, and I’m done.

Only had a cup and a half of coffee hehehe! Don’t want the mafia buy bladder screaming on the plane 😉

Ok, I’m signing off. Wander what my classmates will be like?

Hopefully write tonight!!!
