Books twenty-four and twenty-five in 2012 – “Trunk Music” and “The Lincoln Lawyer” by Michael Connelly

I’m going to combine these books in one post since they are kind of related in the sense that Michael Connelly wrote them both, they are both part of a series, and Bosch and Haller…well just read “The Lincoln Lawyer” and draw your own conclusion on that. You can only draw a conclusion if you’ve read the Harry Bosch books though.

I just love Michael Connelly. The man is a genius at writing suspense novels. He’s the only writer I’ve found that can write a lot of books around once central character without getting boring.

I wasn’t sure about “Trunk Music” while I was reading it. Bosch just kind of felt wrong somehow. A female character from past novels was brought back and I wasn’t sure how I felt about that either. However that’s just part of the genius of Connelly. He makes you feel uncomfortable only to bring it around and make you go oooooh, I get it. I see what you did there. He also is fabulous at making you think you know what’s gonna happen only to show that no, you are not a mystery writer for a reason. So as you read more books, you start to figure it out, then doubt yourself, and it turns out you had it right! So the next book you think, I got you Connelly, I know what you’re going to do, only to find out that no, you’re still not a mystery writer. He’s just so good.

“The Lincoln Lawyer” is the first book in the Mickey Haller series. I very much enjoyed it and went and got the described movie, which I was disappointed in. It’s probably not a good idea to watch a movie based on a book you just finished. Give it some time. Anyway, I was excited to move on to the next Haller book since I’m stuck in the Bosch series.

The next Bosch book is only abridged on Audible. Noooooo! I found the unabridged audio book on Amazon on CD for like seventy bucks. Um, no. So I asked Audible if they could get it. I’m still waiting to hear back about it. I’m not sure what I’m going to do! The next Haller book is also a future Bosch book! *whimper* I’m really at a loss. I don’t want to jump ahead in Bosch’s story, and I don’t want to read an abridged book. So I’m just giving it some time to see if Audible will be able to get it. They said it’s up to the publisher. *fingers crossed*

The thing I liked most about “The Lincoln Lawyer” was that I was completely wrong about one of the characters. I really really liked the bad guy before I knew he was the bad guy. When I found out he was the bad guy, I felt gross. Like, literally dirty. It was such an odd feeling, one I’m not sure I’ve felt before. Actually no, I have. I felt that way when I read “The Concrete Blonde” too, another Bosch book. Connelly, you are just too good.
