I finished my second book of the year last night. Last year my friend JB sent me some audio books he had on CD, one of which was “Void Moon” by Michael Connelly. I really enjoyed it and JB likes Connelly so for Christmas, he bought “The Concrete Blonde” on Audible for me. I finished it last night. I think part of the reason I read it so fast despite only reading at night is because a weekend fell in there and I stayed up way too late Friday and Saturday reading this haha! The pace is such that I just didn’t think about stopping.
When I was reading “Void Moon”, my first thought was that Connelly made it too easy to figure out who the bad guy was. I was wrong. I quickly learned that he is a master at making you suspect everyone. The same was true in “The Concrete Blonde”, although I did have a strong suspicion about the killer about midway through and this time I was right. You better pay attention, or you’ll miss the clues.
JB was a trooper when we chatted recently and I mentioned that one of the characters would make a good spinoff character. JB agreed and gave no hint that a spinoff would not be possible haha! Great poker face there, JB.
This book is part of the Harry Bosch series of books. Bosch is a detective and this book was the third in the series and JB’s favorite. I plan on reading more, for sure. I asked JB if the books got old after awhile. I found that I had to stop reading the Scarpetta books by Patricia Cornwell because the formula became too predictable and she started doing things with the characters I didn’t like. Same with James Patterson and the Alex Cross books. JB says the Bosch series has continued to be good.
The book was published in 1994 and it was really funny to read about communication that couldn’t happen because the car had no rover. They didn’t have cell phones haha! They also used pagers. Wow. Definitely a very good book. They psychology was very interesting and the relationship between Harry and Sylvia was very real, so real in fact, that I related a little too much haha!
With my next Audible credit I’m getting a three book set by Connelly in the Bosch series. Unfortunately they’re later in the series, but JB said they’ll still make sense. I can’t beat three books for one credit.
I’m going to keep a running tally of books this year at the end of these posts.
1. “IT” – Stephen King – Finished 1/4/12
2. “The Concrete Blonde” – Michael Connelly – Finished 1/9/12
