Book twenty-nine in 2012 – “Tommo and Hawk” (The Australian Trilogy Part Two) – Bryce Courtenay

I loved the first book in the Australian trilogy so much that perhaps “Tommo and Hawk” just had a lot to live up to and maybe my expectations were a bit high. I had a hard time getting through a lot of the parts in this book. It was well written and exceptionally narrated like “The Potato Factory”, however there were just numerous times I felt my mind wander far from the story.

This book takes us to New Zealand and the story is rich with history, which I liked. I didn’t much care for the character development of Hawk though, finding myself bored during the chapters written from his point of view. He somehow found himself in a high position in the tribe he and his brother Tommo have found refuge with. I’m not sure how he came into this position and I don’t know if my mind just wandered or if it really wasn’t clear. I’m thinking it was the first option.

Tommo was the character I related with deeply and grew to favor and pull for throughout the book. My thoughts never seemed to stray when we were in his head like they did while in Hawk’s.

I thought I would take a break from this trilogy before moving on to the third, since the material is so dark, the lives of the characters so bleak, but this book ended on such a cliffhanger I had to jump into the third book. I haven’t gotten very far into that one since the Rays are playing west coast games which cut into my normal evening reading time. It’s also Shark Week, so books take the back seat. The third book is holding my attention a little better though, so I’m hoping to enjoy it more and end the series on a good note.
