Book fifty-five in 2012 – “Area 51: An Uncensored History of America’s Top Secret Military Base” – Annie Jacobsen

This book was one included in one of Audible’s recent sales so I snatched it up. I remember my friend Ricardo reading it last year before I was on Audible and I couldn’t find it on iTunes at the time so I was happy to rediscover it at Audible. I enjoyed this book a lot. Being a huge fan of The X-Files , learning about Area 51 was incredibly interesting and the book also delves into history, most of which I had heard about but didn’t know much about since history was not a strong subject at my high school.

As I read this I kept wondering who the heck this Annie Jacobsen person was. I should have looked her up but I didn’t until I was done with the book. Here is how a New York Times article explains where Jacobsen’s info came from:

What is it about Ms. Jacobsen that has made her privy to such inflammatory material? It’s best to know her answer to this question before delving into her book. And her answer is strange and byzantine in the way that all things about Area 51 seem to be. Ms. Jacobsen, a national security reporter and contributing editor to The Los Angeles Times Magazine, happened to be at a 2007 family dinner with her husband’s uncle’s wife’s sister’s 88-year-old husband, the physicist Edward Lovick, when Mr. Lovick leaned over and said, “Have I got a good story for you.”

This book had me until the end when Jacobsen inserts her own theory that I just can’t begin to believe, sorry Annie. I almost wish I didn’t know what I know now about nuclear testing, I can tell you that much. There’s no debate about the truthfulness of that history unfortunately.

Jacobsen narrates this book herself and while I usually don’t like when authors narrate their books, I think her voice is well suited to the narration of this type of book. It was well written and very well researched. I only wish I could insert the book into a word cloud machine so I could find out how often she uses the word, “clandestine”. At least it pushed me to understand the full meaning of the word. She also pronounced it funny, at least to my ear, with the end syllable as “stine” and not “stin”. Potato potahto.
